Brown Pelican Freehand Machine Embroidered Portrait

The brown Pelican is stretched and framed in an 8" wooden embroidery hoop. or can be framed in an 8" black round picture frame.

This bird portrait is part of a larger artwork : The Genealogy of My Imaginary Family, I selected a variety of native birds that range from the familiar to the extirpated breeds from Maryland. I wanted them to feel like family portraits, arranged to create a narrative of subtle expressive reactions and silent dialogue. This Brown Pelican was added for his shark eye and keeping the row in order. This drawing is based on a photograph from a bird app. on my iPad

This bird portrait has been created by free hand stitching on a sewing machine! Otherwise, I draw with my sewing machine. There is absolutely No programing involved. I draw each portrait first as an ink drawing, and use that to trace guidelines of the image on the canvas using a fabric marker that fades or washes away. Even though I may use the same drawing per bird, each becomes a one of kind due to the process that I use. Stitched in black on heavy duty cotton duck canvas fabric and is stretched in a wooden embroidery hoop, ready to hang!
Hoop pieces are stretched and attached with double stick tape to a wooden solid circle that is then framed with an embroidery hoop. The wooden panel is kept in the hoop by the pressure of the closure. Another wooden disc is then wood glued and clamped onto the disc with stretched canvas for a finished back. Each back is signed and has the name of the bird , date and a d-hanging ring. Mix and match with a variety of bird portraits that can be found on www.jennyjen42.com.
